Berlin, 9 March 2017 – The Quartier Heidestrasse ‘commercial zone’ architectural competition design by architectural firm EM2N (Zurich) was recommended to be built.
The competition was conducted to find a design for a building complex for a 28,300 sqm area which runs along the railway lines on the western edge of the development. The plans include around 114,500 sqm GFA of office and business space, as well as some for retail use. The task was to provide an architectural concept of use that would give a distinctive look to each address, with a clear creative design that would also promote significant user identification.
EM2N convinced the jury with its design for 10 interconnected buildings. All the buildings are different in design, with five having 12 floors that also serve to accentuate the horizontal structures. The bright facades are made from precast concrete elements and feature references to Berlin’s industrial architecture. In several places, recesses in the facade provide for loggias, as well as atriums and balcony areas that open to the outside.
Senate Building Director, Regula Lüscher, was delighted with the outcome of the competition: “This building relates to the entire quarter in a very convincing way. Although it is meant entirely for office and commercial use, its design still refers to working and living together, and offers a contemporary range of co-working spaces and open office landscapes – exactly what the creative and innovation economy demands. Through its urban design concept the complex enters into a dialogue with the residential buildings. The clear, appealing architectural language evokes the industrial past of this area. Despite the sheer dimension of the building complex, a distinctive look has been achieved for each address in all the various areas.”
Thomas Bergander, Managing Director of Quartier Heidestrasse GmbH, “This successful design offers spaces for a wide range of different commercial uses and business sizes. [...]
