ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION QUARTIER HEIDESTRASSE: JURY HAS DECIDED ON THE DESIGN FOR THE SPECIAL AREA

Berlin, February 06, 2017. In the architectural competition for the special area of Quartier Heidestraße, the design of the Berlin architectural office ROBERTNEUN Architekten has been selectedfor implementation. In addition to ROBERTNEUN Architekten, the office gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (Berlin) was awarded 1st prize in a first meeting of the jury on December 6 and recommended for further work. After another review by the judges, the decision was made on January 19.

Berlin, 06. Februar 2017. I In the architectural competition for the special area of Quartier Heidestraße, the design of the Berlin-based architectural firm ROBERTNEUN Architekten was selected for implementation.

In addition to ROBERTNEUN Architekten, the office gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (Berlin) was awarded 1st prize in a first meeting of the jury on December 6 and recommended for further work. After another review by the judges, the decision was made on January 19.

The Heidestraße quarter is being developed as part of Europacity. The tender was for the heart of the quarter, where large-scale retail, residential and commercial spaces will be realised as the first sub-project on a floor area of 9,490 sqm. The task was to design the facades and develop floor plans for the respective areas of use.

Senate Building Director Regula Lüscher on the outcome of the competition: “ROBERTNEUN are designing a very self-confident brick building that revives the memory of the site’s industrial past. In terms of urban planning, the identity-creating solitaire does justice to the outstanding location to the highest degree, offering an attractive first floor zone and excellent apartment floor plans all around. I am delighted that around 170 apartments are being built here alongside retail and commerce, and that a 25% proportion of rent- and occupancy-linked apartments have been secured throughout the Heidestraße neighbourhood.”

Thomas Bergander, Managing Director of Quartier Heidestraße GmbH, explains: “We are starting the development of the quarter with an architectural highlight. At a central location on the site, a building of high urban quality and well thought-out functionality is being created. With the implementation of this competition result, we are fulfilling our claim to create attractive and varied living and working spaces in the center of the city.”

The winners of the competition were selected from seven entries. The 3rd prize for the agency AllesWirdGut (Vienna) was already awarded at the jury meeting in December. The competition was carried out by the awarding authority, Quartier Heidestraße GmbH, in coordination with the Senate Department for Urban Development, the Mitte district and the Berlin Chamber of Architects.

AllesWirdGut ZT GmbH (Vienna), ARTEC Architekten (Vienna), Cobe Architects GmbH (Copenhagen/Berlin), gmp Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (Berlin), kadawittfeldarchitektur gmbH (Berlin), Kleihues + Kleihues Gesellschaft für Architekten mbH (Berlin), ROBERTNEUN Architekten GmbH (Berlin) participated. Drees & Sommer Berlin was responsible for the invitation to tender and preliminary review of the competition.

The judges include Senate Building Director Regula Lüscher, Steffen Klette representing the Berlin-Mitte Urban Planning Office, and Thomas Bergander, Managing Director of Quartier Heidestraße GmbH.
